how does one go about choosing a shade of white? REALLY? i went to home depot and benjamin moore and it's truly ridiculous how many shades of white there are. all i know is that i want something slightly warm but not warm enough that it bounces yellowish beige tones off my honey floors. i do not want something cold and clinical. i came home with 40+ samples (no kidding) and i've narrowed it down to about 15 - maybe. the sun hits each part of this house in very different ways, making the same shade vary from room to room. i wanted to keep color consistency throughout the house but that might be impossible.
in related news, sydney informed me today that she wishes she had a pink room. you may recall that i did her room a while back. she recently started taking ballet class. i suppose that's where the sudden pink infatuation stems from. i suppose i could repaint it for her but it took us so long. ugh.
happy news - i found a white bedspread that i lovelovelove.

white?
as i may have mentioned before, i'm totally obsessed with the thought of having a white, airy, feminine kitchen. little by little, i'm collecting things for our future kitchen makeover, which is way down the road but i figure i'll stay motivated if i create a little hope chest.
otherwise known as the cardboard box in my bedroom closet.
i bought a set of dainty white tea cups, an ivory vase, a beautiful watercolor print of maple seeds, a set of crystal high ball glasses, a miniature ivory water basin. & that's about as far as i've gotten.
i do this absolutely ridiculous thing where i hum and hah over something in a thrift store, unsure of whether i'd have use for it in my home, either now or in the future.
last night i looked a set of six cereal bowels. blue and white. $5 for the set. would they match my future kitchen plans? if not, would i find use for them in another room? if not, would i wind up donating them to charity? would they remain in my closet untouched? they were FIVE DOLLARS. i'm going to get them today and move on with life.
seeing this house makes me sort of want to just go for it and paint the whole interior of my home white:
a beach cottage
also,
dans le townhouse
i have a major thing for white. i shy away from it because i have two children. aka will things really stay white long enough to enjoy them? but white would work for me in so many different ways. one of the biggest being that i love pale, washy colours - but i don't want our house to wind up looking like a bag of easter eggs. also, i can't paint to save my life. white is forgiving - if i slop it onto the ceiling, the baseboards, the doors..who cares..it's all white. and lastly, white can act as a beautiful backdrop for accenting pops of colour. i might go for it. i'm just not sure if you are supposed to go with plain ol' off the shelf white or choose a shade of white - upon looking at paint swatches, i'm amazed at the numerous shades of white! there must be a billion of them.

hello
i'm back, after a very lengthy hiatus.
i promised myself i would not tackle any house projects (neither big nor small) until our house was de-christmassed.
well, i got around to putting away all of our gifts at some point in february. just recently, i wrapped the ornaments and put them back in their storage bins. i was making progress. then i left it all, packed and ready to go in the garage, sitting in the middle of the living room floor. it's still there. lazy girl.
i've been doing my usual thing - printing family photos, sorting out in my mind where to create our family history wall galleries, planning the decor scheme for our master bedroom (which will be done shortly, as i'm using some of our tax return to finish it).
i don't want to make any careless purchases for our room, so i'm taking it one step at a time, in the same manner that i approached the kids' rooms. slowly collecting small pieces week by week, giving myself time to pick and choose wisely.
i made a list of 'wants' for our master:
we have our dressers, thank heavens. i'm thankful that we don't have to shell out that expense.
i have plenty of accessories. vases, frames, candle holders, various statues. we have curtains.
i'm considering basing the room around shades of blues, greys and whites (and maybe something bright and unexpected that gives a bit of a colour pop) with weather beaten elements. i need a white bedspread. that is the quintessential focal point of my idealistic airy, coastal master bedroom. a small blue quilt or throw at the foot of the bed would be nice so it's not monotonous and white from top to bottom. i have an ivory eyelet lace bed skirt that i intend to keep. throw pillows would be nice. prints that spice up the rest of the bedding.
night stands. the bane of my existence. i've been on the hunt for night stands for quite some time now. i have my eyes on a few from wicker emporium - my number one favorite furniture store. haven't decided if i want a loud blue or a pale ivory or even a worn black. lamps to go on the night stands. YES. i have my heart set on glass lamps and will likely not settle for anything else. it's unlikely that my husband is interested in having ultra feminine & dainty glass lamps by his side. regardless, i am so in love with glass elements - they sum up my style.
end bench. & what i mean by end bench, if it isn't quite clear, is some sort of sitting area at the foot of the bed where you can throw your pajamas, your purse, your car keys, whatever. i love wrought iron benches but the likelihood of finding one at a decent price is slim. i'll settle for something small and wooden or banish the idea entirely.
mirrors! we do not have a single mirror in our bedroom. i have been poking around stores, keeping my eyes peeled for something that will fit my coastal scheme. more on this later. i haven't decided where to hang mirrors, whether i want round or square, whether i want wood or iron. etc.
& family memories. holy smokes, we have the mother load of options here. i have bins filled with family photographs and drawings that the kids made and certificates of all sorts and the whole shebang. i have no idea where to start. i'm thinking of enlarging our wedding invitation and framing it in something thick and chunky, something that will act as a focal point on a wall. other options for framing include a pretty quote, an ultrasound photo, a drawing or two made by my girls. i'm out of ideas. i've got to do some serious brainstorming over this one. i have copies of wedding certificates belonging to grandparents on both his side and mine but i don't know how appropriate they are for *our* master.
last but not least (and not included in the list above) - i'd like to consider adding some type of chair, a bookcase, and perhaps a floor lamp. but those things are costly and can come later.
oh & paint. that one is a given. wedgewood grey by ben moore is on my list of maybes but i've got to speak with our local ben moore consultant regarding our honey floors & complimentary paint colours.

under $10
thrifted picture frames:
total cost $5
obviously in need of some tlc aka spray paint.
teeny tiny paintings:
& up close:
the last one - so cute for christmas! i couldn't resist.
did you notice how beat up our hardwood floors are? the previous owner had a dog or possibly a few. i figure there is no sense in doing anything fancy to them until the kids are older. they'll just get destroyed again.
total cost of mini paintings - $10.
& something lovely that i made for our landing:
a framed picture of my girlies playing in the autumn leaves. last year when we first moved into our new home. such a special picture. this was a beat up brassy icky second hand frame that i cleaned, sanded lightly, and sprayed with oil rubbed bronze spray paint. we have several other pictures from this special day and i'd eventually like to frame each of them and make a mini gallery next to this one. this day, in my heart, totally commemorates settling into our forever home.
total cost for the above framing project: approx. $5.
